Richard Rogers, Scandicci and Florence in mourning died aged 88 • Nove da Firenze
Richard Rogers, a Florentine architect who left a very deep mark on Scandicci, died at the age of 88. “Richard Rogers left us. His hand and his extraordinary nature as an architect changed contemporary architecture and indelibly marked the transformation of our city. About fifteen years. recalls the mayor of Scandicci Sandro Fallani – ago the architect was called by the mayor Doddoli to design our center with a masterplan, designing the now famous “dragonfly” which is the urban model on which the great transformations of Scandicci are based starting from the backbone of the tramway, of the parking lot exchanger, the beautiful civic square, the urban park that is being born, the Turri area and all the pedestrian reinforcement that winds from Piazza Resistenza towards Piazza Matteotti and Piazza Di Vittorio.
Rogers has to all of us the power of change and the beauty of the transformation we are experiencing, weaving with Simone Gheri a relationship of presence, advice and continuity in the city both for the planning aspects and also for the presence on the birth of the square. This morning I contacted my nephew Ernesto Bartolini to communicate the closeness and gratitude of the whole city. Rogers’ work is a World Heritage Site and we are proud to have had in Scandicci who will surely remember it “.
“A light has been shed on international architecture. Richard Rogers was one of the world’s leading star architects and has redesigned many skylines in the main capitals ”. He states it the mayor of Florence Dario Nardella.
“In Scandicci – recalls the mayor – Rogers designed the new urban center. Its name is linked to futuristic architectural projects such as the Pompidou Center in Paris, the Lloyd’s Towers and the Millennium Dome in London, the building of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, the offices in Berlin in Potsdamer Platz, a terminal at Madrid Barajas Airport and the Three World Trade Center in New York ”.
“Florence, homeland – concludes the mayor – is a way to remember his genius”.
