The Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) of Lyon (Rhône) is mobilizing to raise awareness among Rhone residents of “irreversible damage to the gift animal”. At the end of the year 2021, with the arrival of the holidays, the SPA fears a sharp increase in the number of dropouts related to this practice.
Poisoned gifts
According to the SPA, more than 5,500 cats were reportedly abandoned at the start of 2021, once the magic of the holidays rings out.
To combat this phenomenon of adoptions motivated by the choice to offer an animal to a loved one without ensuring that he is ready to assume the responsibility, the shelters of Brignais and Dompierre-sur-Veyle are sending a clear message to their visitors: “if you wish to offer an animal, introduce yourself with the future owner. This approach is essential. “
So the message is: “adopt yourself responsibly”.
Indeed, the Lyon SPA claims that being offered a pet implies
great responsibilities and does not necessarily make everyone happy: “that requires daily involvement and financial investment, in order to meet the needs of the new family member. Even today, too many people neglect these aspects and cause irreversible damage. “
