VINCI is commissioning the Strasbourg West bypass (A355)
- New road infrastructures that will relieve congestion in Strasbourg and its surroundings and facilitate the development of shared mobility solutions
- New environmental measures taken during construction and operation
- A 54-year concession for an investment of € 561 million, including € 130 million in environmental measures
Friday, December 17, 2021, the western ring road of Strasbourg (A355) in eastern France was put into service. Recognized in the public interest on January 23, 2008, this 24 km long road represents the most important motorway project carried out in France in recent years.
The A355 was inaugurated in Ittenheim on December 11, 2021 by Jean Castex, French Prime Minister, and Pierre Coppey, Deputy CEO of VINCI and Chairman of VINCI Autoroutes, in the presence of Xavier Huillard, Chairman and CEO of VINCI, and of many local elected officials.
VINCI Autoroutes, as the contracting authority, financed the cost of € 561 million for the project and will also operate and maintain the new motorway under a concession contract for a period of 54 years old.
The commissioning of this motorway marks the culmination of a project launched in October 2018 after three years of studies and preparatory work, which involved 6,000 people and more than 300 companies, a third of which are based in Alsace. The design and construction work was entrusted to a consortium made up of VINCI Construction (Dodin Campenon Bernard, leader, VINCI Construction Terrassement, VINCI Construction France and Eurovia), VINCI Energies (Cegelec Mobility) and Ingerop Conseil & Engineering.
By diverting carriers from the A35 urban motorway, the A355 will relieve congestion in the city of Strasbourg and its surroundings, saving up to 10 million hours lost each year, and will facilitate the development of shared and low-carbon mobility solutions, contributing thus reducing atmospheric and noise pollution and improving the quality of life of local residents.
Its design, construction and operating model make the A355 a pioneering project in road transport infrastructure, in terms of ecological transparency and environmental integration. For example, 1,315 hectares of land have been the subject of environmental compensation measures – 4.5 times the total right-of-way of the motorway completed – and 130 wildlife crossings have been built, i.e. one passage every 200 meters, or in relative 20 times more than on other motorway networks in France.
