Renovation work on Toulouse main station, which began in March 2021, will enter its most spectacular phase in 2022. Accessibility, creation of a service center and a shopping mall on the program for final delivery in September 2023.
Matabiau is moulting. The building, listed as a historic monument, born in 1865 and then enlarged and transformed in 1905 with its characteristic white stone facade has already benefited from a new extended pedestrian square. The restored marquise will soon highlight this embellishment on the facade. Other work has started, more discreetly, since March 2021. The new sales area has thus been created opposite the metro entrance on the forecourt, on the right side of the station when viewed from the city center, in front of the Formerly the Departures hall, now called hall 2. This sales area will be delivered in March 2022. Same date for the services division, which will include toilets, a comfortable waiting room accessible to people with disabilities and lost property. This will be on the other side of the square, in front of hall 1 (formerly Arrivals hall) to the left of the station.
North underground passage closed in January 2022
The most spectacular works of the site launched by SNCF Gares & Connexion to “bring Matabiau into modernity”, according to Jacques Peynot, Director of Major Projects of SNCF Gares & Connexion, will begin in January 2022. “The accessibility of the station , from the forecourt to the train, requires the closure for 18 months of the North underpass which currently provides access to the platforms “, explains Dominique Lécluse, director of the NeÔmatabiau project (the name of the project launched by the SNCF). Passengers will use the southern underpass during these works to access the platforms by fixed stairs.
Ultimately, five new elevators and five new escalators will make the station perfectly accessible to everyone, with sound terminals to guide the visually impaired. The north underground passage will see its width double from 4m50 currently to 9m.
The heart of the station closed in April 2022
At the same time, from April 2022, the heart of the station will also be closed for works until June 2023 in order to allow the creation of a “travelers’ gallery” in place of the current sales area between the halls 1 and 2.
This gallery will include new shops, some of which open onto the forecourt. After the work, Matabiau will thus accommodate around fifteen retailers compared to the current eight (i.e. 2,700 m2 instead of 1300m2 today). On the first floor, a restaurant and reception area of 250 m2, panoramic, accessible by lift, will offer a view of the station square and the vast renovated hall. Calls for tenders for the various brands are in progress. In January 2023, it will be the turn of halls 1 and 2 to be renovated.
The entire renovation of the station, an investment of 42 million euros, is to be completed in September 2023 for the Rugby World Cup. A renovation that must both highlight the historic building and in particular its metal structure (pillars and beams will now be visible), make it accessible and offer services and shops to users. By virtue of the slogan recalled by Agnès Moutet-Lamy, regional director of stations in Occitanie: “Want to train station, want to train”.
