FC commentary on Wolfsburg coup: Joker party also poker party

1. FC Köln scored an important 3-2 in the duel between the troubled people at VfL Wolfsburg, which means they are still in the midfield of the Bundesliga. Our author comments not to get too kölsch euphoric.
“Of course happy too” was Steffen Baumgarts (49) autopsy findings immediately after a successful wolf hunt by 1. FC Cologne on Tuesday evening (December 14, 2021). The FC coach’s clear announcement before the game: “We’re looking down”. That’s right!
The derby euphoria was followed by two poor Cologne appearances against relegation candidates Bielefeld and Augsburg. Wolfsburg has now lost six competitive games in a row, really no performance, the one Champions League participant would have been worthy.
Against supposedly grateful opponents, the FC has been busy with themselves recently. Also from the VfL offensive – the third worst in the league before the match day – there were two counter goals poured out. In order for it to be enough for the first league away win under Baumgart, Schwabi had to parry brilliantly several times.
The Cologne comeback kings wear a crown of thorns
Nevertheless, it was enough to win this time: thanks to tireless offensive power, Tony double pack and King Schindler. No reason to ignore why the Cologne comeback qualities and Baumgart’s golden hand were needed again at all. Because – the FC coach recognized this very well – the comeback kings always wear a crown of thorns.
In the entire Bundesliga, billy goats get by far the most points after the deficit (twelve), and together with Hoffenheim they score the most hits after the 75th minute (nine). Great statistics, no question about it! They testify to Baumgart’s motivating qualities and belief in one’s own strengths. But that also means: If you constantly celebrate comebacks, late goals and joker parties, you are doing something wrong beforehand. FC have conceded one goal in every Bundesliga game this season.

As won, so melted: don’t confuse fun with safety
The Baumgart enthusiasm football is fun and earns points – important and correct first steps on the much-cited “path”. The destruction of the poker factor should, however, follow as quickly as possible, otherwise much of what has been won could be lost again quickly.
Werder Bremen, the direct Cologne competitor from last year, should continue to serve as a memorial: After 24 games, they thought they were dying in calm waters, twelve points ahead of a direct relegation place – and suddenly ended up on this very same place in the final accounts. It is only logical that at FC the later stronger playful development under Baumgart is by no means understood as unshakable security.
Nevertheless, the FC look down can also bring a bit of happiness towards Christmas: At least eight points could be a win against Stuttgart as winter fat on the relegation rank – worthwhile prey after the successful wolf hunt. Either way and despite the joy of the holiday after the successful Hinserie: You shouldn’t make yourself too comfortable in Cologne, because the game does not end until after 34 rounds.
