A painting by Claude Nougaro sold at auction in Toulouse
It is discreetly hung in the Urbain Vitry auction room in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne), a stone’s throw from the Place du Capitole, but it is a real eye-catcher. The Artcurial Toulouse-Vedovato study is organizing this afternoon, at 2:30 p.m., an auction bringing together furniture, works of art, silverware, old books and paintings, including a work by Claude Nougaro.
Date 1957, titled “Naked Woman”, it is a pastel, gouache and pencil, on cardboard, measuring 65 cm by 50.5 cm, estimated between 2,000 and 2,500 euros. Dark in color and very loaded in graphics, the painting represents a naked woman surrounded by characters and includes a representation of the singer from Toulouse, who liked to nestle in his paintings with a bull’s head.
“Claude Nougaro is the history of the city, the heritage of Toulouse so this canvas is a rare object, there are few on the art market, analyze Jean-Louis Vedovato, the auctioneer of this sale. He painted around 200 canvases and drawings and few people know the pictorial artist Claude Nougaro was. There are also similarities between his songs and his art. We already have several people seen by this work. The painting was offered by the singer from Toulouse to friends at the end of the 1950s.
The auctioneer of this sale has already sold a drawing by Claude Nougaro in 2015. It was an oil and felt-tip pen on canvas, entitled “Self-portrait”, dated 1996 and sold for 9,000 euros.
