From the beginning of the school year 2021 to 2022, the School and Sports Department started a pilot test with free menstrual items in ten schools.
An interim evaluation shows that the free distribution of hygiene items is appreciated by both schoolgirls and school staff.
From the beginning of the school year 2021 to 2022, menstrual items were provided free of charge in the girls’ toilets in nine secondary schools and one primary school.
Unproblematic access to tampons and sanitary towels
The offer reached a total of 1153 pupils in the ten school buildings. A survey of schoolchildren and school staff shows a high level of acceptance for the distribution of free menstrual items. In the interim evaluation, sanitary napkins are a little more in demand than tampons.
Overall, the quality of the articles was rated as good. School management and housekeeping and technology management are also positive about the pilot. The offer corresponds to a need and has been implemented well, and the article has not been “hamstered” either.
Both pupils and class teachers are of the opinion that unproblematic access to tampons and pads helps to reduce feelings of shame. Quotation from a student from the survey: “I think it’s a very great offer because I no longer have to worry about getting the rule in the middle of school.”
Take off the load and save yourself from embarrassing situations
City councilor Filippo Leutenegger, head of the school and sports department, who launched the pilot test at short notice, sees only advantages: “I am particularly pleased that you can relieve young women of a burden with this uncomplicated measure and save them from embarrassing situations.”
The pilot project will continue until the end of the school year. Whether the free distribution of menstrual articles should be extended to all secondary schools has yet to be examined and, if necessary, a decision must be made.
