The case involves the husband of ex-presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, blogger Sergei Tikhanovsky, and five other defendants. They have been in custody since last spring. The case was heard in a closed judicial code in a pre-trial detention center in Gomel. The verdict will be announced publicly. The trial began in May and lasted about six months.

Sergei Tikhanovsky, Artem Sakov, Dmitry Popov were tried under four articles of the Criminal Code: according to part 1 of article 293 “Mass riots”, part 3 of article 130 (inciting social enmity), part 2 of article 191 (obstruction of the work of the CEC) 1, part 1 of article 342 (organization and participation in actions that grossly violate public order) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus. Igor Losik and Vladimir Tsyganovich – under part 1 of article 293 and part 3 of article 130, Nikolai Statkevich – under part 1 of article 293 of the Criminal Code.

What does the case file say?

As follows from the materials of the case, Tikhanovsky, Statkevich, Sakov, Popov, Losik and Tsyganovich, who were involved by them, have been planning to organize mass riots in the country since the beginning of the summer of last year during the preparation and holding of the presidential elections in August 2020.

In the course of the investigation, it was established that modern political technologies were used for these purposes – they tried to create a distrust among the population of a different attitude towards the authorities.

As follows, it was also established that these persons, already at the end of 2019, began to appear on the Internet with public speeches for preparation, active participation in illegal mass events during the presidential campaign, during the preparation and conduct of the electoral campaign in 2020.

The case uses the facts that Tikhanovsky and his associates, under the guise of collecting signatures in support of their presidential candidate, illegal mass events in Minsk, Brest, Grodno, Mogilev, Soligorsk, Miory, the Prosecutor General’s Office said.
