there are five new Michelin stars in Portugal
Five more Portuguese restaurants can now have a Michelin star on their doorstep and become part of the Michelin guide in the 2022 edition.
The Vila Foz restaurant, led by chef Arnaldo Azevedo, is not Porto. In Lisbon, the Cura, from the Ritz Four Seasons restaurant, under the baton of chef Pedro Pena Bastos. In the Alentejo, in Reguengos de Monsaraz, the Esporão restaurant with chef Carlos Teixeira. And two more stars for the Algarve: for A Ver Tavira by chef Luís Brito and Al Sud, in Lagos, by chef Louis Anjos, which is part of the Clubhouse of the Palmares hotel.
Portugal now has seven restaurants with two stars and now 26 with one star, with no loss of stars since last year (see the full list at the end of the article).
During the gala it was also announced, and for the second consecutive year, the Michelin green stars – which highlights the restaurants that are at the forefront of sustainable gastronomy. Portugal made its debut in this category with the Esporão restaurant, in Reguengos de Monsaraz, receiving a green star and the Madeiran Il Gallo D’Oro receiving another.
“Our teams also noted that increasingly specifying a greater interest in offering a cuisine that is more concerned with environmental and health issues. We cannot but congratulate and support this fundamental movement, illustrated this year with the freedom of a Green Star to eight new restaurants especially committed to these factors,” said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guides.
After a year in which a Michelin star gala was exclusively virtual, without an audience, the approximately 600 presentations were able to be present in the auditorium of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia to see the 2022 selection live.
For this reason, even before making the stars of this year’s Guide known, an organization called on the stage the “stars” from 2021 who could not be present due to the pandemic, such as chef Ljubomir Stanisic from the 100 Maneiras restaurant and the Spanish chef Eneko Atxa who has a Michelin star in her Lisbon restaurant (Eneko Lisboa).
This year’s guide includes 1,362 restaurants from Spain, Portugal and the Principality of Andorra, among which we have 11 restaurants with three stars, 40 with two stars, 211 with one star and 284 Bib Gourmand (Portugal has 41 restaurants in this category. result with prices below 35 euros per person).
Another of the night’s novelties was the presentation of two special awards, one for young chefs, in which the Spanish chef Mario Cachinero, who at 25 years of age is in charge of the Skina restaurant, in Marbella, and who has two Michelin stars, was distinguished. The other distinction, from Chef Mentor, went to Martin Berasategui, also Spanish, born in San Sebastian, who has the Fifty Seconds restaurant in Lisbon and has had a Michelin star for two years.
The Spanish chef indicated that he owes this award means to his teams. “Without them I wouldn’t be what I am today”. “At a time without university for cooking, I was lucky to have university at home, learning to cook with my parents,” said the chef with his clenched fist – his hallmark.
