the Métropole de Lyon commits 2.3 million euros for the Place Gabriel Péri
The Métropole de Lyon finally dealt with the subject this Tuesday during its community council, voting an envelope of 2.3 million euros for the place Gabriel Péri.
“Source of many dysfunctions, the Place Gabriel Péri and the adjoining public spaces are at the heart of the action of the Metropolis and the City of Lyon in order to offer the inhabitants of the district and the metropolitan territory new peaceful spaces for all. The Métropole de Lyon has continued consultation on the urban development component since the fall “, is it specified. This phase, which ends on Wednesday, will make it possible to define the arrangements selected. The envelope of 2.3 million euros will be used “both to finance the first works from the year 2022 and those who want in-depth studies to be carried out in future years in order to participate in the gradual improvement of this sector“.
Depending on the conclusions of the consultation, consideration could be given to creating and resuming pedestrian crossings on the Cours Gambetta, the elimination of herringbone parking on the Cours Gambetta in order to improve pedestrian paths and the use of active modes, the pedestrianization of the north of the rue de Marseille, the small rue Moncey and the rue Paul Bert, the redevelopment and revegetation of the place Gabriel Péri and the requalification of the space in front of La Poste.
“Place Gabriel Péri and its surroundings, at the center of our Metropolis and our history, is at the heart of our concerns with the City of Lyon. By mobilizing already more than 2.3 million euros, we will be there to improve this space for all in order to participate in the appeasement of this sector. The stakes in this popular and very frequented district are multiple and we are working there in close collaboration with the city of Lyon, the State, the SYTRAL, and in consultation with the users, the traders and the inhabitants.“, replied Béatrice Vessiller, the vice-president in charge of town planning and living environment.
The vote of the deliberation went rather well, far from the nervous breakdowns of the morning.
Christophe Geourjon, elected UDI who knows the 7th arrondissement well, simply considered that a “PVC response is not at the level”. PVC? For pedestrianization, revegetation, consultation, a finding that could come up in the debates during the mandate …
Even if no one attacked Grégory Doucet during the meeting, the mayor of Lyon felt compelled to retort by storming. Alone then.
“What have you done ?”, he launched several times to his opponents elected for several terms, reproaching them for not having had any educational, public health or cultural action for the Guillotière. The ecologist councilor called for a “large, pleasant central square, vegetated, peaceful” and recalled its “attachment to la Guillotière, one of our emblematic districts”.
