The gendarmes of Dijon, pioneers of collective compost
And you, do you sort your peelings and your leftover meals to make compost? Note that from 2024, this will be mandatory, we will no longer have to throw an apple core in the gray bin. In Dijon, the gendarmes set an example. For the past month, the Deflandre barracks have adopted 7 collective bins to absorb their food waste. The compost produced will be delivered to local farmers who grow vegetables for restaurants in the heart.
This action within a barracks is a first in France, and that makes Commander Jérôme very proud. L, one of the initiators of the project “This compost will be delivered to farmers who are 4 kilometers from farmers, so we remain in short circuit. It is in addition to producers who work with people with disabilities. This material will be used to grow vegetables. which will be delivered to the Restos du cœur. There is therefore an economic, social and solidarity dimension which corresponds very well to our values ”
A large-scale test
The Deflandre barracks have 400 housing units for more than 2,000 occupants (the gendarmes and their families) and everything is off to a good start. Alice Jeannet works for the Dijon-based company Alfacy, which installs the compost bins “Our model is based on a participation of 30% of families. At the end of a month already 15% of households participate, and look, everything is very well done: in the bin there is a lot of organic waste without meat or fish. No trace of plastic. Frankly, it’s exemplary. “
We’re all gonna have to get started
The gendarmes are not the only ones to make compost. In the agglomeration of Dijon, there are already 86 collection points, but this concerns residences or buildings much more modest. This large-scale test will be used to extend collective composting. _ “We are all going to have to get started by 2024”recalls Claire Couvidat, sorting ambassador for Dijon Métropole. “This is the date on which the communities must put this system in place. When we talk about our people on our tours, it is rather well accepted. People are ready to play the game. They just ask us to put it in place. place of simple and practical actions on a daily basis. “_
Over a period of two years to adopt the right reflexes, as in the case of glass, cardboard and plastic. Know that on average, organic waste constitutes a third of the volume of our trash. Compost is therefore a great waste reduction issue.
