Cities are trying to support retailers after the abolition of markets. Prague bought goods from them
Cities and businesses are trying to support small traders who, due to government measures, are unable to sell their products at Christmas markets. For example, Prague bought some of the goods from them. In České Budějovice, the merchants started selling in a culture house.
Most cultural events are canceled. However, the České Budějovice House of Culture has turned into a Christmas fair. The vendors there have stalls on two floors. According to the organizer, there should be around 30 of them on the weekend. “Traders are here from all over southern Bohemia, even from Havlíčkův Brod,” said the organizer Roman Jabůrek.
“We were supposed to be in Ševětín, then at the Christmas market in Týn nad Vltavou. The government canceled all events, so we are glad to be here,” is the waffle seller Zdeněk Novotný looking forward.
“It’s nice that we have the opportunity for at least a little compensation for the canceled Budweis Christmas markets,” added sock seller Ludvík Tříska.
Only vaccinated people or those with a certificate of illness can go to the Christmas fair. “We maintain a capacity of up to 100 people,” Jabůrek explained.
In Jihlava, some traders offer their goods in stores around the city center. “Here we have the goods of a gentleman who makes goods from wood by hand. We have agreed to prepare a place for him in the display case,” said saleswoman Olga Wiesnerová.
For example, the Prague City Hall decided to buy handicrafts for more than 800,000 crowns from the stalls on Old Town Square.
“We will create a total of 3,300 Christmas packages. For example, for paramedics in intensive care units. Other packages will then go to employees and clients of nursing homes,” said Vít Hofman, a spokesman for the Prague City Hall.
In Ostrava, the stalls on the square definitely said goodbye on Tuesday. The municipality there supports 30 sellers with the amount of 20 thousand crowns. Elsewhere, the Christmas markets have been renamed instead of support, for example, they continue as cultural events on Prague’s Wenceslas Square. The administrative body has to solve it.
