Mobile open air theater De Carrousel was forced to stop: “O… (Antwerp)
The mobile open air theater De Carrousel no longer receives financial support to continue its operation. After less than a year, the story of De Carrousel stops, which is forced.
Since May 2021, Antwerp has had a new stage: De Carrousel. The mobile open-air theater with a revolving stage is an initiative of MartHatentatief and was located at the Scheldt quays all summer. In the autumn square the construction still goes to the Arenaplein in Deurne. The idea for De Carrousel arose in the fall of 2020 from the need to provide a stage in corona-safe conditions.
The organization has now announced that it will have to stop its operation after a year. “Even without corona, there is an enormous need and a structural shortage of fast playgrounds. That is why De Carrousel also wants to continue its operation in 2022 and has asked the city and the Flemish Community for the requested support. Unfortunately, this financial support was not provided. Unfortunately, De Carrousel cannot continue without new financial input.”
To be able to continue its operation, De Carrousel needs 130,000 euros per year. “To put the magical wooden construction in a warehouse after one year would be too bad.” And so the theater is aimed at “a wild benefactor with a heart for culture”, at “cities that also experience the great need for stages” and at “organizations with wild project plans” to make their voices heard. “We regret that this beautiful story ends here and wish De Carrousel a bright future.” evw
