It is a sneaky and unrecognized pollution. With each click, a computer connected to the global network releases CO2 into the atmosphere. The Internet is also the third largest energy consumer in the world, with a release of 600 million tonnes of CO2 per year. And that doubles every year. Also, believing that each developer, company or user of a website can do their part of eco-responsibility, My Green Site offers tools for a more responsible surfer.

The idea arose out of two start-ups based in Rouen (Seine-Maritime), the developer FTEL and the eco-responsible host Webaxys: “Everything happens in data centers. They must constantly cool their installations. So, if you have a site, it is stored there, it is consulted or at least searchable at all times. So it emits CO2. Consumption depends on the weight of its photos, videos, animations or even unused lines of codes. We have to be aware of this, ”explains Quentin Leroux, the project’s communications manager.

A web host who only uses green electricity

So, with his collaborators Kevin Boudard and Kevin Cauchois, he tackles “each element constituting a site”. “We optimize the weight of a website as much as possible. First, the customer can know its impact by going to an online calculator (www.websitecarbon.com). Then, he can create a new eco-designed site with our CMS (Content management system, content management system) who will reduce their weight as much as possible without the will to forbid anything. It will not be a low-cost site ”. A small comparison is easy, according to the founders: the same site created on WordPress, one of the most used CMS, will consume an energy equivalent of 1,002 kilometers in an electric car, on Wix (another CMS), 1 247 kilometers, and on My Green site, 472 km.

But the proposal goes even further. With their partner Webaxys, the customer will be able to store his site with a host using only green electricity thanks to solar panels and recycled car batteries.

“The benefits for the customer are for their image, to save money and for professionals to improve their CSR approach (Corporate Social Responsibility and the environment). For us, our desire is to decarbonize the web. It’s simple and very visual for a responsible digital company, ”adds Quentin Leroux.
