Reopening: Lively interest in the Christmas market

At Salzburg’s largest Christmas market in Salzburg’s old town there was a lot of rush on Sunday. The lockdown end ran into problems. 2G proof and an FFP2 mask are mandatory at the Advent markets or in museums.
On Sunday the usual pictures at the Christmas market quickly became apparent: the visitors strolled from stand to stand, food and drinks were also sold – just like before the lockdown, with 2G access control and a mask requirement.
“It doesn’t help – nobody likes to do that. But if you want to do something, you have to do it that way, ”said one of the visitors, Hans Gehrer-Knechtl from Salzburg. Lejla Karahodic from Salzburg, on the other hand, thought it was “somehow strange that so many people are there now.”
It remains to be seen whether alcohol will be served from Friday
At the Christmas market there is still only children’s punch – that could change with the opening of the gastronomy on Friday: “From there we would of course be ready. But we will look at what it looks like here in the city, what it looks like with the state government. If there is a wish here that there is still no alcohol, then we will not serve any ”, said the chairman of the Christmas market, Wolfgang Haider. “The regulation would then actually allow it.”

Not much going on in the fortress or in museums
The landmark of the city of Salzburg, the fortress, was also open to visitors for the first time on Sunday. There wasn’t much going on there on the first day after the fourth lockdown: “I think the next three to five days will be even quieter,” said fortress administrator Bernhard Heil. “When the hotels unlock next weekend, there will certainly be more.”
It was also like quiet in the museums – like in the Museum der Moderne on Mönchsberg. But those who were there were happy about the opening – like Ina Corvaci: “The first moment where it is possible, to experience and to be able to leave.” And the art mediators in the museum are also happy to be able to personally again – even IF the interest in the digital tours has grown over the past few weeks.
