Samuel Eto’o elected at the head of the Cameroonian Football Federation
The former international Samuel Eto’o was elected president, to everyone’s surprise, of the Cameroon Football Federation, the Fecafoot (Cameroon Football Federation) announced on Saturday. Former FC Barcelona and Inter Milan player Samuel Eto’o defeated outgoing president Seidou Mbombo Njoya, who was elected in 2018. But his election, contested by several Cameroonian football players, was canceled in in mid-January by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. This election also took place against a backdrop of the crisis linked to the placing under supervision, twice, of Fecafoot by Fifa.
The former was elected international with 43 votes in front of the outgoing president, 31 votes cast, an AFP journalist. When submitting his candidacy on November 17, Samuel Eto’o assured him that he would be the next president of the Cameroonian Football Federation “despite the cheating”.
In 2018, Eto’o supported the candidacy of Seidou Mbombo Njoya, but he now expresses his “disappointment”. The promises made three years ago by the current president “seemed to me worthy of interest for the future of our country”, he was justified. Ex-captain of the Indomitable Lions, Samuel Eto’o retired in September 2019, after a last experience in Qatar. Cameroon will host the final phase of the Africa Cup of Nations from January 9 to February 7, 2022.
