Caen. What will the forest island set up near the ring road be used for?
Very close to the ring road and the Caen Memorial, 15,000 trees will be planted on a 5,000 m² plot. This forest island should make it possible to promote biodiversity and fight against climate change.
A real anti-noise and dust-proof wall. Led by the Trees-Everywhere company, the project consists of planting a forest island of 15,000 trees against the Caen ring road (Calvados), not far from the Memorial. Friday and Saturday, a participatory plantation was held with employees of companies that have contributed to the realization of this environmental initiative. “About 15 companies have helped us, such as Legallais, Natixis, the Caen Memorial or even Terra Fertilis, specifies Sophie Grenier, co-founder of Trees-Everywhere. With all this federation of companies by our side, we are very happy and fulfilled. “
This island aims to advance biodiversity and reduce global warming. The trees and shrubs planted, 30 to 60 cm high today, were chosen by the company because of their ability to adapt to climate change. Among the 15,000 trees, local and classic species such as beech or oak, but also hazelnuts and honeysuckle which come from the Levavasseur nursery in Ussy.
5,000 m² of plant barrier
The islet is very densely planted: three tree seedlings are introduced in a single square meter, on the 5,000 m² of the Caen plot dedicated to rue des Roquemonts. Ultimately, it will be 150 meters long and 10 to 35 meters thick. An innovative technique created by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki in the 1970s. “This type of forest island captures two to ten times more CO2 than forests dedicated to logging, details Arbres-Partout, which “allows a natural regeneration of flora and fauna”.
In a few years, the forest formerly created a carbon sink, a kind of reservoir that stores CO2, but also a biodiversity refuge for animal and plant species. The different trees are planted without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. “This tree plan, which we process in place with companies, will allow us to move quickly and especially in the face of the scale of today’s climate issues”, assures Sophie Grenier.
Fully paid for by partner companies, 180,000 euros were needed for this program. The town hall of Caen wishes to develop this kind of carbon sink projects, particularly in the area of the exhibition center, and the new sports center.
