The Russian occupiers are repressing under the guise of fighting terrorism
In the occupied territories of Ukraine, Russia is repressing activists, human rights activists and journalists under the pretext of fighting terrorism.
According to a Ukrinform correspondent in New York, this was stated by Deputy Ambassador of Ukraine to Yuri Vitrenko at an open debate in the Security Council on security in the context of UN terrorism and climate change.
He decided that Ukraine was concerned about attempts to use the fight against terrorism for repression under occupation. “We are impressed by Russia’s practice of oppressing Crimean Tatar activists, human rights defenders and journalists in the occupied Crimea under the guise of measures to combat terrorism and terror against civilians in the temporarily occupied Donbas,” Vitrenko said.
The fight against certain forms of terrorism will not be enough “unless the problem of state-sponsored terrorism is resolved decisively and comprehensively,” the diplomat said, referring to Russia.
He also means that the militarization of Crimea, which Russia is trying to create on a naval base, and aggression in eastern Ukraine have a negative impact on the environment.
For example, Vitrenko showed that in the occupied areas of Donbass, many coal mines were cut off from electricity. And the installation of ventilation and pumping systems often leads to emissions of mine gases, flooding of mines and surrounding areas.
As Ukrinform reported, the UN General Assembly approved an updated review “The problem of militarization of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol (Ukraine), as well as part of the Black and Azov Seas.” This document is adopted by the General Assembly every year since 2018.
