Valmet will collaborate with Metsä Board Husum in Sweden to increase production capacity for folding board and to improve efficiency and environmental performance

HELSINKI, December 9, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Valmet will deliver a long-term performance agreement and a rebuild of the board machine to Metsä Board Husum in Sweden. The main goal is to increase the board machine BM 1’s total equipment efficiency (OEE) and capacity for folding board (FBB) by 200,000 tonnes. Valmet delivered BM 1 to Metsä Board 2016. The start-up of the rebuilt BM 1 is planned to take place in the autumn of 2023.
The order is included in Valmet’s order intake for the fourth quarter of 2021. The value of the order will not be announced. The total value of an order of this type and scope of delivery is usually around 70-80 million euros.
At present, the annual FBB capacity for BM is 1,400,000 tonnes, and after the investment it will rise to 600,000 tonnes. Metsä Board responds to the growing demand for sustainably produced packaging materials that support the circular economy.

Technical information about the delivery
Valmet’s delivery for the conversion of BM 1 will include a performance agreement, additional equipment for stock preparation system, and significant improvements to the entire machine and the following parental role management, outside the machine coater, and reels.
In 2022, even before the rebuilding of BM 1, the life cycle Performance agreement will be established by establishing the tools and a common way of working. The contract work will be started by improving the current BM 1’s overall equipment efficiency (OEE). The work will continue by supporting the start-up and further optimization of BM 1’s efficiency. The agreement will be based on Valmets Industrial Internet solutions and Performance Center operations. This collaboration will ensure a first-class start-up and high performance throughout the machine’s life cycle.
For BM 1, Valmet’s delivery will include equipment for stock preparation, as well broke the collection The system will be upgraded to meet the new requirements. Small improvements will be made in the wet part to improve driveability and to increase drying capacity. Most of the improvements will be made in the dry part of the BM 1: drying capacity of pre-drying and post-drying the sections will be significantly expanded by adding more drying cylinders, a new one OptiSizer movie with supply systems and air dryers, and a new one OptiCalender hard and OptiReel linear will also be included in the delivery. The existing unrolling and rolling in the off-machine coater will also be upgraded. The delivery will also include highly automated transfer rails and parent trolleys, which will connect the BM 1, BM 2 and off-machine coater to a new one OptiWin drum two-drum rollers and other rolling machines. All machines and equipment included in Valmet’s delivery will be delivered installed.
The cardboard machine with a 7,250 mm wide fabric produces folding cardboard and liquid cardboard with a basis weight range of 155–355 g / m2. The mechanical design speed for the new parts will be 1,000 m/my.
