The United States may threaten Russia with harsh sanctions because of its “intention” to attack Ukraine, but they will be difficult to achieve, and the effect of such measures may be insignificant in order to influence Moscow’s actions. This is reported by the newspaper New York Times…
The publication notes that the introduction of restrictive measures in the Russian sector is complicated by the energy situation in the market – high prices for oil and gas. Among other things, the sanctions could seriously affect the economies of European countries that depend on Russian energy supplies. The article says that thanks to this, Moscow can respond to the sanctions imposed against it, namely, to reduce the volume of gas to the countries of the European Union.
NYT also draws attention to the fact that disconnecting Russia from the SWIFT system is unlikely to lead to the fact that Moscow will change its course. Iran, which was disconnected from the system back in 2018, remained at the same rate, the newspaper said. The author of the article believes that this measure, on the contrary, can only exacerbate Russia.
The publication also recalls that the previous sanctions imposed on the Russian Federation did not bear much fruit: Crimea remained a part of Russia, and the war in Donbass continues.
Previously became knownthat new US sanctions against Russia could include “Putin’s entourage” and energy companies, as well as involve disconnecting Russia from SWIFT.
Officials are currently considering “a wide range of sanctions against Russia, designed to deter Russian President Vladimir Putin from invading Ukraine.”
