“We are witnessing new geopolitical, technological and economic challenges to democracy. “It means more than ever to show determination and wisdom to defend the values of democracy and prevent destructive forces from questioning them,” he said.
He emphasized that Lithuania knew the price of freedom and democracy after liberating itself from the autocratic USSR and creating a sovereign state based on democratic values.
“We need to make sense of the lessons of the past and make every effort to strengthen democracy,” he said.
The head of state stressed that in order to prevent the activities and influence of authoritarian regimes, it is necessary to protect freedom of speech, uphold human rights and fight corruption, which destroys the institution of democracy.
