RB Salzburg as an Austrian pioneer
Salzburg is the first Austrian team to enter a knockout phase of the Champions League.
Thanks to a goal by Noah Okafor, Salzburg die at home against the Europa League record winners FC Sevilla 1-0.
Okafor has contributed to the very repeated performance of Salzburg over the six rounds, three goals and general strong performances. The 21-year-old is the climber within the Salzburg team as well as the Swiss national team. In the decisive goal against Sevilla in the 50th minute, he took advantage of a space in the penalty area. For the last half hour, Salzburg’s task was made easier by the fact that Seville midfielder Joan Torres was sent off after two warnings.
Between 2006/07 and 2018/19, Salzburg tried eleven times in vain to reach the group stage of the Champions League. Even against the Luxembourgers from F91 Dudelange they failed in the qualification. But his past dies. Now they have left FC Sevilla and Wolfsburg behind in a balanced and reduced group.
Wolfsburg was fourth in Group G before the 6th round, but could have reached the round of 16 with a home win against Lille. But the Wolfsburg lost at home to Lille 1: 3. Substitute Renato Steffen scored for Wolfsburg shortly before the end to make it 3-1. The French champions finally won the group before Salzburg.
Champions League spring without Barcelona
For the first time in 21 years, a knockout phase of the Champions League will be played without the big FC Barcelona. The Catalans lost the selected game at Bayern Munich 3-0 after they were also defeated by Bayern 3-0 at the beginning of the group stage at Camp Nou.
Barça is pushing themselves back from Benfica Lisbon to 3rd place. The Portuguese, for whom Haris Seferovic did not play, won at home against Dynamo Kiev, the clearly weakest team in Group E, 2-0. It’s 2-0 after just 22 minutes.
In retrospect, when the Catalans are annoyed that they did not have many very good chances in the home game against Benfica (0-0). On the other hand, it was also the match in which Haris Seferovic awarded a so-called hundred percent in the 94th minute.
