COVID-19: 15 more deaths and 5,286 infections in Portugal – News
Today, 917 people infected with the SARS-Cov-2 virus are hospitalized (down from 19 on Tuesday), with 138 of them in intensive care units (another five), according to today’s report on the pandemic in Portugal by the DGS .
Lisbon and Vale do Tejo is the region of the country with the most new cases diagnosed in the last 24 hours (1,796), followed by the North (1,600), the Center (1,315), Algarve (338) and Alentejo (122).
Of the 15 deaths, five occurred in the centre, four in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, three in the Algarve, two in the north and one in Alentejo.
By age group, nine people who died were over 80 years old, five between 70 and 79 years old and one between 60 and 69 years old.
The greatest number of deaths continues to be concentrated among the elderly over 80 years old (12,102 of the total 18,587 deaths caused by covid-19 in Portugal since the beginning of the pandemic), followed by age groups between 70 and 79 years (4,003) and between 60 and 69 years (1,695).
There are now 62,834 active covid-19 cases (2,250 more than on Tuesday) and 3,021 people have recovered from the disease, bringing the national total of recoveries to 1,096,285.
Compared to Tuesday, health authorities have over 2,539 contacts under surveillance, totaling 82,077.
Of the new cases, 900 were diagnosed in people between 40 and 49 years old, 796 between 20 and 29 years old, 789 between 30 and 39 years old, 676 between 50 and 59 years old, 621 up to nine years old, 573 between 10 and 19 years old, 552 between 60 and 69 years old, 287 between 70 and 79 years old and 92 in those over 80 years old.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region has registered 449,953 cases and 7,866 deaths.
In the North region, 441,113 infections and 5,676 deaths were registered since the beginning of the pandemic.
The Central region now has a cumulative total of 166,941 infections and 3,281 deaths.
The Algarve has accumulated 50,707 infections and 538 deaths and the Alentejo has 43,205 infections and 1,067 deaths by covid-19 since March 2020.
The Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded, in the last 24 hours, according to the DGS, 81 new cases, totaling 15,462 infections and 110 deaths, and the Azores 34 new cases, totaling 10,325 infections and 49 deaths.
The regional authorities of the Azores and Madeira publish their data daily, which may not coincide with the information published in the DGS bulletin.
The new coronavirus has already infected in Portugal at least 1,177,706 people – 628,508 women and 548,378 men -, indicates data from the DGS, according to which there are 820 cases of unknown sex, which are starting under investigation, since this information is not modernization automatically.
Among the 18,587 people who have died with covid-19 in Portugal since the start of the pandemic, 9,742 were men and 8,845 were women.
Covid-19 has caused at least 5,270,700 deaths worldwide, among more than 266.54 million infections by the new coronavirus recorded since the start of the pandemic, according to the latest report by the France-Presse news agency.
The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in several countries.
A new variant, Omicron, classified as “worrying” by the World Health Organization (WHO), has been detected in southern Africa, but since the South African health authorities raised the alert on 24 November, infections have been reported in 57 countries from all continents, including Portugal.
