Sustainable development of the Lidl network: from EDGE certification to electric car charging stations
The buildings of Lidl Lietuva’s logistics center and most stores have earned the international green building certificate EDGE. This shows that the efficient use of energy and resources is one of the most important priorities of companies in the design and operation of their managed buildings, ”says Lukas Eidukevičius, Head of Construction Quality and Projects at Lidl Lietuva.
Another sustainable news is the higher energy efficiency class Lidl stores. “Previously, we built A + energy efficiency class store buildings, and from 2021 – only A ++ class-compliant stores. In addition, energy resources and hot gas emission saving pumps in buildings, ”says L. Eidukevičius.
Renewable energy without exception
Since the opening of Lidl’s stores in Lithuania, the company has been buying only electricity produced from renewable sources and using additional solar power plants on the roofs of some of its stores.
“We are proud not only of the external electricity produced from renewable sources, but also of increasing such energy production in our divisions. your company had three solar photovoltaic power plants, and at the moment there are as many as twelve of them. In addition, we have installed a geothermal heating system in the center of Tauragė, ”says L. Eidukevičius.
Energy saving – from the warehouse to the store
Lidl Lietuva not only builds efficient buildings, but also implements intelligent energy consumption solutions in all real estate managed by companies.
“All Lidl stores are equipped with automatic LED technology lighting, so there is no risk that employees will forget to turn off the lights when they leave the house. Another example of energy saving is the morning, while the preparations for the opening of the store are underway, electricity is used in the saving mode, ”says L. Eidukevičius.
According to the company representative, Lidl Lietuva is constantly looking for ways to reduce electricity consumption. “Some stores have meters, according to which we identify the most electricity consuming equipment. In addition, an integrated building management system in our buildings allows us to monitor electricity consumption remotely, identify specific deviations from the norm and take action if necessary. ”
House with purchased and loaded electric car
Lidl believes that sustainability is important at every step, and therefore aims to reduce its negative activities at all stages, from product production to in-store shopping.
“We are working to improve the infrastructure of our vehicles and encourage customers to choose less polluting cars – bicycles or electric cars – and thus reduce our CO2 footprint. For this reason, we have already installed five free electric car battery charging stations at Lidl stores, and there will be more in the future. In addition, for the convenience of our customers, we have updated the bicycle and footpaths when building the shops, ”says the Head of the Construction Quality and Projects Department.
The company also oversees other infrastructure improvements. “Before designing new stores, we listen to the help of the local community and the municipality, and we try to take them into account. For example, we are preserving part of the trees, installing additional parking spaces, renovating crossings, children’s playgrounds and basketball courts, ”L. Eidukevičius continues.
