Brno is premium in terms of sorting: workers will replace machines, the line will be automatic
In some European countries, similar modern lines already work. “So far, this is a completely unique project in the Czech Republic, with a significant extension beyond the borders of our metropolitan area. The increased capacity of the line will serve the entire region and increase the percentage of sorting success. We can maximize the effect of recycling and waste management of characters to a higher quality level. Many more reusable commodities will enter the circular economy, “said the mayor’s deputy Petr Hladík.
The new line sorts seven thousand tons of plastic and eight thousand tons of paper a year. Last year, the current manual sorting belt processed four thousand tons of plastic and six and a half thousand tons of paper.
The technology of the new line manages to sort up to four and a half tons of waste per hour. The automatic line recognizes plastics by shape, composition and even color. A system of machines for the separation of ferrous and non-ferrous metals will also be built into it, enabling, for example, the collection of cans, lids or cans. The powerful press with a capacity of six tons per hour compresses sorted plastic and paper into bales for further processing. The line will also include a polystyrene crusher.
Brno wins first place: the automatic line sorts four tons of waste per hour
The existing handline would soon hit the edge of its capacity. Also due to the fact that the volume of separated waste increases every year. “The amount of plastic doubles every five years. Ten years ago, we drove 994 tons of plastic from the streets of Brno, less than four thousand last year. In some localities, even daily collection is no longer enough, “said Filip Leder, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the city company Sako.
The modern line will take sorting to a new level. “People don’t realize it very much, but sorting waste is still done by hand. It is demanding, insufficiently effective and sometimes flawed. The automatic sorting line can sort a much wider range of plastics in a quality and quantity that the human factor simply cannot achieve, ”said Leder.
