Since its installation in 2016, the oval roundabout of the rue de Biganos makes cringe, even more, to Saint-Martin-de-Fontenay, south of Caen (Calvados). “This is not the result obtained”, blows the mayor Martine Piersiela.
Shaped like a “rugby ball”, this roundabout is a source of controversy for residents and a fear for safety. “I cut it when I turn to avoid accidents,” slips one of the residents.
“The streets are not opposite each other”
The municipality organized a meeting with residents on Wednesday November 24 to discuss the subject. “The Aménagéo firm worked on three proposals, we chose one. We are offering it to you and we would like to discuss it with you, ”says Deputy Mayor Jean-Louis Malaquin, who is leading the meeting.
In general terms, the solution chosen still offers an oval roundabout but reduced in size, and the give-the-way streets of Clauset and Poplars are advanced for better visibility of motorists. “It’s ridiculous, it’s exactly the same chosen! », Plague one of the residents present.
Either way, the problem is that the streets are not opposite each other.
Lights to slow down and rounded roundabout claimed
Over the minutes, the exchange becomes more constructive.
To avoid doubt in the mind of the motorist, even the one who is not from the municipality, it must be of a round shape!
The participants also mentioned the installation of lights or stops on the main street. “The Department did not want there to be fires because that will cause more traffic jams”, continues Jean-Louis Malaquin.
Work hoped for in 2022
A roundabout more rounded than before is also required, as well as educational lights which turn red when driving too fast, to reduce speed and promote the safety of residents.
“We took all your comments and we will work on the file again with the Department to find a solution. There is no miracle solution, we are simply trying to find the best way to acquire, slow down and satisfy our inhabitants ”. Future work could take place in 2022 and an envelope oscillating between 20 and 30,000 € has been announced.
