Brno architects give old buildings a new life. They were destined for demolition

It used to be an old distillery. For decades, time has robbed her of plaster, inhabitants, life and meaning. Brno architects from the KOGAA studio decided to save the distillery from complete destruction. And since 2018, it has been alive again. There are offices or studios in the renovated building in Řeznická Street in Brno. The studio is now continuing similar projects.

Their essence lies in the fact that instead of the owners of the dilapidated building demolishing and building new ones, they will repair them and give them a new meaning. “We have already completed the reconstruction of the DADA District building on the embankment of the Svitava River or repaired the building at Údolní 19,” said Alexandra Georgescu, the studio’s founder.

Hellish ride, terror and meeting angels. Brno’s Kníničky was occupied by krampusáci

Originally an administrative building and cinema from 1929, Údolní thus became a creative mushroom called Kumst, full of beginners and experienced entrepreneurs, scientists and artists. The former ruin in Sekaninova Street was again replaced by a lighted apartment building.

According to the Prazdnedomy.cz platform, there are sixty-nine similar buildings in Brno. And architects Tomáš Kozelský, Alexandra Georgescu and Viktor Odstrčilík intend to reconstruct some of them.

For example, they designed a new look for the museum in Modřice in the Brno region or the Futurum shopping center: “We chose the old distillery ourselves. It was our start-up project. We have made a number of orders since then and more will follow. We focus not only on being a satisfied customer, but also on having a positive impact on the local community and the development of the area, ”added Georgescu.

He has already received many awards for the fruits of his work. For example, the Czech Architecture Prize or the Best of Reality! “Reconstruction is often bureaucratically more expensive and more expensive than demolishing a building and building a new one. However, old houses have a kind of charm and in larger cities such as Prague or Brno are interesting for investors. Such buildings are attractive for many people and companies, “outlined the economist Petr Pelc.

Eliška Gruberová from Brno, for example, agrees with this, preferring history over modernity in the streets. “Old houses have stories, souls. It’s a shame to tear them down when there’s a way to keep them. I appreciate that someone is going on a more complicated path, “the woman thought.
