SPD in Berlin approves the new coalition agreement between Red-Green-Red
At a digital party conference of the Berlin SPD, 91.5 percent of the delegates voted for the coalition agreement negotiated with the Greens and the Left. The party chairman Franziska Giffey sees the paper as a “great opportunity”.
The Berlin SPD approved the coalition agreement negotiated with the Greens and the Left on Sunday afternoon. At a party congress, 91.5 percent of the delegates vote in favor.
On the occasion of the corona pandemic, the SPD state party conference is taking place as a hybrid event. The executive board sat together in the “Estrel” hotel in Berlin-Neukölln, while the delegates were connected by video.
Giffey sees coalition agreement as “great opportunity”
Berlin’s SPD chairman Franziska Giffey sees the red-green-red coalition agreement as a good basis for moving the city forward over the next five years. “Together we now have the great opportunity to shape Berlin as a city of equality, diversity and cosmopolitanism, as a city for all those who want to live freely and independently here,” said the governing mayor-designate on the Sunday before the vote .
Berlin should become as strong again as it was before the Corona crisis. That is why the coalition is relying on support for the economy, a hiring offensive for the police and teachers, the continuation of the school building offensive, a functioning administration, more housing and a safe, clean city. The coalition agreement between the SPD, the Greens and the Left, presented just under a week ago, is a good basis for all of this.
Paper depicts social democratic goals
The SPD achieved that many of its goals, which it represented in the election campaign, found their way into the government program, said Giffey. A coalition agreement had been drawn up, “which really completely depicts and reflects our social democratic goals.” Even This will become clear with the proposed division of responsibilities in the new Senate. “This is a great success,” Giffey continued.
But the Greens and the Left also shaped the treaty. “You can say that despite all the differences, we have put together a program in which the others can also find themselves.”
The party’s offspring were also very satisfied with the paper. Unlike the traffic light in the Bund, you didn’t have to swallow any bigger toads with red-green-red, said Juso chairwoman Sinem Tasan-Funke on Sunday. She also warned: The coalition must treat each other differently and appear more united in the future.
Praise from the comrades from Brandenburg and the Federal SPD
The designated Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) paid tribute to the coalition’s government work in Berlin in his greeting before the vote. The politics of “a big city require great management and communication skills,” he says. “Franziska, you are the woman who can do that,” said Scholz in the direction of Giffey. Scholz praised that the Berlin SPD Giffey and the Berlin SPD have set new targets for construction and the construction of underground lines.
The Brandenburg Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) was also able to address the delegates of the state party and praised Giffey as an “excellent colleague”. In his welcoming address to the party congress, Woidke announced closer cooperation in order to develop Berlin and Brandenburg into a leading region in Germany. To this end, both state parliaments should cooperate more closely. The state governments of both countries could meet more often, said Woidke.
Greens and leftists & also agree
The SPD, the Greens and the Left presented their 150-page paper last Monday; they have been ruling Berlin together since 2016.
The Greens do not want to decide on the coalition agreement until next Sunday, while a member decision is already underway for the Links – until December 17th. Assuming approval, the new red-green-red Senate could start work before Christmas. It is planned to elect SPD country chief Giffey as the new ruling mayor on December 21.
