Saint Nicholas made children’s eyes sparkle
“I would like to receive a Bayern Munich jersey”. Leroy, 10 years old, shone, before meeting the Great Saint, Sunday afternoon, place de Paris, in Luxembourg-City.
Like him, they were dozens of children, accompanied by their parents, to have invested at the stroke of 2 pm the small place occupied by the Christmas market. “It’s even a bit narrow,” says Jérôme, Leroy’s dad. Despite his venerable age, Saint Nicholas had braved the drizzle to come and meet the little ones.
“The children are all good. And they must take care of their health, ”he slipped behind his large white beard, when he took his place on his throne. “I said hello to him and wished him a happy new year,” confided 9-year-old Lukas, bag of candies in hand, after his passage in front of the Great Saint.
“It would be a shame to deprive people of celebrations”
Others, younger, left the scene in hot tears, impressed by the solemnity of the moment. This year, however, there was no question of the traditional procession. “Too complicated to organize with the CovidCheck”, admitted Patrick Goldschmidt, alderman of the city.
And while other municipalities simply and simply canceled the festivities, “we insisted on the coming of Saint Nicholas, because life goes on and it would be a shame to deprive people of celebrations”.
Much to the delight of 3-year-old Maria-Victoria, who ordered a doll. The alderman believes that “the vast majority of people say the rules and wear their masks, while we are outside”.
