Switzerland provides 7 million francs for the modernization of the agricultural education system in Armenia – Public Radio of Armenia
On December 3, 2021, Switzerland started a long-term development project to support Armenia in its efforts to modernize the agricultural vocational training system. Swiss development cooperation approved an aid program for Armenia with a total amount of 7,130,000 francs (around 7.7 million US dollars).
The project is supported by a unique alliance of international and local development actors as well as the public and private sectors, which is also mobilizing additional funds. The reform is being implemented by the Swiss NGOHEKS, the Armenian NGO SDA and the German Society for International Cooperation GIZ under the leadership of the Armenian government.
The intervention will help the Armenian government to reform agricultural vocational training and better adapt it to market demand, leading to more economic development and more decent jobs. The project aims to improve employment opportunities for young people in rural areas by combining theoretical knowledge with practical training in selected professions. Part of the reform is that in addition to theoretical knowledge at vocational schools, students will have the opportunity to improve their skills in local businesses and farms. Your training path ends with a state diploma.
The project started on December 3, 2021 with a preparation phase of 9 months. The implementation phase will then take at least 8 years with Swiss funds totaling CHF 7,130,000. In order to increase the impact and effectiveness of the project, Switzerland works with a large number of partners: the government of Armenia, international organizations, the public and private sectors and academic institutions. Other funding partners who are significantly increasing the Swiss contribution include the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development BMZ, the Austrian Development Agency ADA, the Armenian Izmirilian Foundation and some private companies in Armenia. Some of these contributions are subject to final approval.
The project is being carried out in the southern regions of Syunik and Vayots Dzor, as well as in several northern regions. The implementing organizations are the Swiss NGO HEKS, the Armenian NGO SDA and the German Society for International Cooperation GIZ.
The project implements the principles and goals of Swiss foreign policy and development cooperation. Switzerland supports Armenia’s transition to a market economy and helps the country’s population benefit from inclusive economic development. The project benefits from Swiss expertise in economic development in rural areas and the dual education system.
