Why is the test alarm carried out?
Basically, of course, the alarm IS done to test the sirens. The city of Cologne explains the purpose of the test alarm in detail on its website: “In the event of catastrophes and major damage incidents, your safety and property can be endangered. In order to limit these hazards, if possible prevent them, we have set up a siren warning system. So it is possible to alert you to dangers immediately. ”In order to check the functionality of all sirens and to familiarize everyone with the siren alarm, the next test alarm will take place on Saturday, December 4th, 2021 at 12 noon.
How do you warn?
The test alarm begins with a one-minute continuous tone, which means “all clear” in an emergency. This is followed by a five-minute break. Then from 12:06 p.m. a one-minute rising and falling howling can be heard. This is the actual warning signal that indicates a dangerous situation in the event of a real emergency. After another five-minute break, at 12.12 p.m., a one-minute all-clear sound closes the test alarm.
In the event of a real danger, the city can intervene in the current radio program on Radio Cologne in an emergency and thus inform listeners. How do you have to behave in an emergency?

Why are there sirens?
Sirens are assigned the so-called “wake-up effect”. Especially at night, the television and radio are normally switched off and the cell phone can be muted. The wailing sound of a siren is independent of this and reaches the population day and night.
