SIC returns to the lead in CNN Portugal’s debut month
An analysis of TV audiences by the media agency Universal McCann, which is part of the Mediabrands group, reveals that in November, the ranking of the most watched channels in Portugal remained in line with the previous month, with SIC in the lead. The Paço de Arcos station, in 1st place for 34 consecutive months, reached a share of 18.9%, 0.2 pp less than in October. TVI followed with 16.4% (-0.2 pp vs. October) and, excluding the consumption of others, RTP1 closed the top 3 most viewed of the month with a share of 11.9% (+0 .9 pp), becoming the public television station with the most watched program of the month – home defeat of the National Team against Serbia.
With regard to the universe of pay TV channels, CMTV maintained its leadership with a 4.4% share, followed by SIC Notícias with 2.1% and Globo with 1.8%. In the month under review, there was a change in the grid of this typology of channels with the debut of CNN Portugal on November 22, replacing TVI24. When counting the audiences from the first day of the issue to the final of month, the new channel of Media Capital recorded the average audience of 53 thousand viewers, which corresponded to a share of 2.5% and, in this period, it ranked at 2 .th position of the most watched on pay TV.

In November, taking into account the average of all specializations in each program, a surprising defeat of the National Team against Serbia should be highlighted, in a decisive match counting for the qualification of the World Cup in Qatar. This was the most watched program of the month, as it managed to capture, on average, more than 2.3 million viewers, that is, 43.5% of the total number of individuals who were watching television during the game period. Benfica’s goalless draw in Barcelona followed, in a match counting for the 5th round of the Champions League, broadcast by TVI. The game reached an average audience of 2 million Portuguese, which corresponded to a share of 41.7%. Closing the top of the month’s most viewed was the 0-0 draw of the National Team in Ireland, which reached close to 2 million viewers. This month also highlights the matches for the Cup of Portugal broadcast by TVI, for the program Isto é Gozar com Quem Trabalha – 4th Variant (SIC) and for O Price Certo (RTP1), which continues to attract attention of the Portuguese by consistently remaining in the top of the most viewed.
In terms of audiences by time period, TVI led in the early morning hours (02:30 – 07:30) and not late at night (00:02:30) with a share of 9.1% and 17.5%, respectively. SIC, on the other hand, commanded the mornings (7:30 am to 12:30 am), where it recorded a share of 14.9%, in lunch hours (12:30 to 2:30 pm) of 26.9%, in the afternoons (2:30 to 6:30 pm) on 17, 6% and in Prime-Tempo (20:00 – 00:00) 21.2%. RTP1 was the leader during the Pre-Prime period (18:30 – 20:00), when O Price Certo is broadcast, presented by Fernando Mendes. At that time of day, the public television station achieved a share of 18.2%.
