Kanin, the highest Slovenian ski resort, offers Off-trail, heli skiing
STA, 3 December 2021 – This year, Kanin, Slovenia’s highest ski resort, will expand its services by offering off-piste skiing with a mountain guide and ski heli. Next year, the ski resort is expected to renovate 50 million euros, which will include the replacement of the old ski lift with a new one.
This Saturday marks the start of a new ski season in Kanin, and the two main new attractions this year will be off-piste skiing with a guide, which will only be available in good weather conditions, and heli skiing.
According to the head of the Bovec Alpine School, Robert Rota, Kanin is a very interesting location for off-piste skiing, but due to the many caves near the ski slopes, it is best to hire a guide.
The school, in cooperation with the Association of Slovenian Mountain Guides, also conducts workshops and lessons on skiing and protection against avalanches.
Those who want an even more adventurous experience will be able to take a helicopter from Bovec or Lesce airports offered by Flycom Aviation to Kanin or any other remote location from which they want to start skiing.
Ski resort manager Manuela Božič Badalič believes that the future of Kanin is a planned renovation worth 50 million euros, which will include the replacement of a 50-year-old ski lift.
Due to its age, the current system is sensitive to wind and requires high maintenance costs.
Financial planning is currently underway, and preparations for the renovation are expected by the end of the year, said SDS MP Danijel Krivec.
The public call is expected to be published after the new year, and the project also includes the installation of an anti-snow and snow system and a new restaurant.
Construction work is expected to begin next year and be completed by the end of 2023.
As the replacement of the old ski lift is planned, the ski resort will probably be closed for one summer season, but all efforts will be made to ensure that the winter season is not lost, Krivec said.
He was not precise about the sources of funding, he mentioned that the money will be drawn from various sources, including EU funds.
