Activists occupy Bumke premises in the north of the city
On Saturday lunchtime activists from the north of town occupied the former industrial premises of the Bumke company on Engelbosteler Damm. According to their own information, there are several dozen squatters in the building.
Bumke premises in Hanover occupied
The cast started at 1 p.m. A quarter of an hour later the police were on site, but initially acted and waited. At around 1:45 p.m., she raised a massive line-up of water cannons and emergency services. The officials called on people to distance themselves from criminal offenses and to appoint a leader for the meeting.
Most recently, exactly a year ago, an ensemble of vacant houses on Schulenburger Landstrasse was occupied to demonstrate against homelessness. The occupation was evacuated that evening.
According to the squatters, this time it is again about self-determined living and affordable rents. According to the company, several initiatives for the occupation have come together.
Controversial plans for grounds
The Bumke site is controversial in the district. As soon as the company has moved to Weidendamm, the area is to be developed into living space. The Gerlach company has started the demolition. Initiatives from the protest that more expensive housing is being created there. They wanted to continue to use the site and remodel it themselves.
The mood on site is irritable. When the first police cars arrived, paving stones and construction site barriers flew in the street. The squatters emphasize that this was only intended to block the street, that does not constitute violence. The police, on the other hand, call this violence against police vehicles in announcements.
Scramble at the gate
In front of the barred gate of the Bumke site, which the squatters broke into at noon, there was meanwhile a scramble with police officers in full gear. “We are peaceful, what are you?” Chanted the interlocked occupiers.
The police now judge the action as a gathering and have banned any gathering in front of the Engelbosteler Damm 5 and 7 houses. The squatters should actually have to clear the gate. At 2:10 p.m. they were taken away.
