Floyd Mayweather: Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez ducks David Benavidez
The retired fighter wants to see the super middleweight get the chance to face Canelo.
Floyd Mayweather believes that Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez should fight David Benavidez next.
Canelo is set to fight Ilunga Makabu, the WBC champion in cruiserweight, provided the Congolese win their obligatory defense. Next year’s Cinco de Mayo weekend could offer the Mexican the chance to win another weight class.
When Mayweather spoke before the fight for Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis against Isaac Cruz coming this Sunday, Mayweather praised the Mexican.
“Canelo is a damn fighter,” Mayweather said BoxingScene.com.
“But my personal opinion, he ducks Benavidez. You know, it’s just my personal opinion. And I have to say what I think. That’s exactly what it is. He goes up to cruiser weight.
“And I’m not hitting him, but he’s going up to cruiserweight and the same guy [Makabu] was on, he used to be at Mayweather Boxing Gym, and the guys really got the best of him at Mayweather Boxing Gym.
“So, if he goes up to quote, remove cruiser weight, I mean, if that’s the case, Benavidez will go up and hit the same guy. He could hit the same guy at 168. So he does nothing, you know, like. I said before, but when you’re put in a certain position, he should be, I mean, he can like me, you know, when I’m in a position, I can pick and choose who I want, because I deserved that right. “Do I like this fight? Uh-uh. Absolutely not. We want to see Benavidez. Let’s make it happen.”
