Hunt rats with ferrets: an ancestral method that dates back to the 15th century. It was tested for the second time yesterday, place André Daste, in Empalot. The city called on Alexandre Raynal, ferret breeder in the Gers, specializing in rat control, and his two tame ferrets: Mûre and Nuit. This method consists of bringing the ferrets into the underground galleries, covered with nets to capture the rodents when they come out. In just a few minutes, thanks to the smell and the presence of ferrets, the rats get scared and rise to the surface. Once needed, “To avoid stressing them, the rats are locked in the dark and are then euthanized with carbon dioxide” explains Alexandre. At the end of thirty minutes, and of about thirty rats had been crowned with success thanks to the work of the small ferrets which do not come out of the galleries until they have dislodged all the rats.
A more natural method
The ferret rat control process is an effective way to drive these rodents away while avoiding the use of polluting products, such as rat poison. “Our desire is to conserve biodiversity. Animal service in the city tries to
find more natural methods to scare away pests ” declares Françoise Ampoulange, municipal councilor responsible for animals in the city, present during the operation. However, ferret rat control will not completely eliminate the use of chemicals as it can only be done outdoors. Rodenticides continue to be used in confined spaces until other solutions have been found.
