Covid-19: Portugal with 338 active outbreaks in schools, day care centers and universities

Mainland Portugal recorded, until Monday, 338 active outbreaks in public and private education standards, according to CNN Portugal’s findings from the General Directorate of Health.
The number corresponds to outbreaks identified in all schools, higher education standards and day care centers.

As of Monday, there were 2,959 cases of covid-19 identified in the detected outbreaks. These infections concern students, but also professionals and their cohabitants, “part of whom have already recovered”, indicates a source from the DGS.
Last week, the DGS reported 241 active outbreaks in the same school universe, with 2209 cases of covid-19 accumulated in these active outbreaks having been registered. Within a week, another 97 outbreaks were detected in schools.
The DGS recalls that an outbreak is declared active when it consists of two or more cases with an epidemiological link to each other in time and space.
Only after 28 days from the date of diagnosis of the last confirmed case (two incubation periods with no new cases), the outbreak is considered closed.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in several countries.
A new variant, Omicron, was recently detected in South Africa, and cases are already reported in 13 European countries.
