“Vertical greening” project: the city grants up to CHF 30,000 for green facades and roofs
Private individuals and companies who die greening their facades or roofs in the city of Zurich receive a subsidy. This is intended to counteract the development of heat in summer and promote biodiversity.
With the “Vertical Greening” program, private landowners receive a one-off contribution for new projects that amounts to a maximum of 50 percent of the costs, as the Green City of Zurich announced on Thursday.
The “More than Green” program provides financial support for green roofs and surrounding areas, with CHF 20 per square meter being paid for upgrading the ground and CHF 50 per square meter for converting gravel roofs into green roofs. For both programs, the maximum contribution is limited to CHF 30,000.
“The summer heat load has a negative effect on the health of the population and the diversity of species,” writes Grün Stadt Zürich in its press release. Green roofs are effective insulating measures to incorporate these effects.
The promotion of biodiversity is a mandate that is anchored in the municipal code of the city of Zurich. It has been upgrading its own land for years – currently just under 11 percent of the land is considered ecologically valuable. The city can only achieve the target of 15 percent if private landowners also do so by name, according to the announcement. (sda)
