Sofia. Bulgaria will have a beginning of smart and enlightened people, whose gaze rises high above the asphalt. People who will return the high quality of Bulgarian education and science to be competitive at the world level. This confidence was expressed by Vice President Iliana Yotova at the award ceremony of this year’s winners of the scholarship program “For Women in Science”, announced by the press office of the head of state.
“Everyone here today shares the belief that investing in science and education cannot be tolerated,” Yotova said, citing data showing that in 2020, R&D spending is only 0.9% of GDP. Bulgaria. For comparison – the EU average is 2.3, excellent with 3.5% of GDP in Belgium and Sweden. The Vice President expressed hope that these statistics will change with the goals set in the National Plan for Recovery and Sustainability. It provides specific activities for the development of research, innovation and technology in favor of accelerating economic and social security and development in Bulgaria, specific incentives to build an effective link education – science – business, including the construction of the necessary legislative framework for the economic of these ambitions. “Projects should not be created only for the absorption of funds, but to create sustainable jobs and prospects for the Bulgarian economy,” said Iliana Yotova.
The Vice President points out that in comparison with other European countries Bulgaria is making progress in equality between men and women in the field of science and high technology, but there is still something to be achieved in combating the stereotype that science is reserved for men. Iliana Yotova congratulated the participants in the program for their courage to give to science.
The program “For Women in Science” started in Bulgaria in 2010 in partnership between Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski ”, National Commission for UNESCO – Bulgaria, and L’Oréal Bulgaria. 30 women scientists have been awarded. This year’s winners are Assoc. Prof. Ina Aneva, who works in the field of Molecular Biology; Dr. Maria Kalapsazova – scientific field of Inorganic Chemistry; Nina Stoyanova-Nankova – scientific field of Medical Chemistry.
