Austria briefly moved east

As Foreign Minister, Sebastian Kurz recorded his greatest success on the international stage. While he was still so modest when he took office in 2013 that his former German colleague Frank-Walter Steinmeier, a Social Democrat, took worries under his wing, the Austrian soon no longer lacked self-confidence. With the so-called ban on the Balkan route for migrants and refugees in spring 2016, Kurz prevailed against initially outraged resistance in Brussels. The building of a fortress Europe, which was much criticized at the time, is an EU-wide accepted policy.
