Whether streaming providers, cloud providers or internet providers, all of them have now settled in Frankfurt. Most of Germany’s data centers are located in the Main metropolis.
Streaming providers, cloud providers, e-commerce portals and internet providers have now established their data centers in the metropolis on the Main. On the one hand it is certainly due to the attractiveness of Frankfurt, on the other hand it is mainly due to the fact that the city is home to most of the data centers in Germany. Even in international comparison, Frankfurt doesn’t need to hide.
In addition, the most extensive data exchange between Internet Service Providers (ISP) takes place here. “More and more companies want to come here for reasons. This means that more data centers are emerging and data density continues to die due to network effects, ”says Jerome Evans, founder and managing director of firstcolo and the diva-e Cloud GmbH based in Frankfurt.
Data centers: data volume in Frankfurt is growing rapidly and
Since 2006, firstcolo has been using a data center location in Frankfurt am Main due to the high number of Internet carriers – despite the location in Munich at the time. “This is where the most relevant platform of various network operators in Europe is located – this node is DE-CIX. In Frankfurt we have the best possible connection to him, ”explains Evans.
In addition to the well-known big players in the data centers, which focus on so-called colocation offers, and the large number of value-add data centers, the data volume is also growing steadily. Data from big data applications, machine learning, deep learning, IoT, video-on-demand and regular company data as well as e-commerce platforms need not only to be saved, but also with customers and partners all over the world share. Die is now causing a rapidly growing flood of data of more than ten terabits per second.
“For most people, this number is difficult to classify: ten terabits per second can be used with the data volume of 2.2 million videos in HD quality – started at the same time – or 2.2 billion A4 pages written per second Compare second. There is no other hub in the world where such a data volume is transferred per second, not in Tokyo and not in New York, ”says Jerome Evans, describing the current situation.
Data center and managed services
With firstcolo Evans offers modern services for data centers and managed services in Frankfurt as well as in several European redundancy locations. “From our own experience, we know that outside of Frankfurt, on the other hand, it is difficult to implement data center offers with several terabit connections. Many locations are on the right track, but cannot yet cope with today’s bandwidth requirements, ”he explains. Therefore, many companies have settled in Frankfurt. You can use the excellent benefits for yourself there – even if only virtually in a data center.
There are numerous advantages to high traffic
Despite all the speed, experts do not see the data traffic at its maximum yet. Technologies such as artificial intelligence or 5G will further increase traffic in the future. “In addition, more companies are settling in Frankfurt and are dying due to strong network effects and an ever-increasing data density, moving closer to their customers,” said Evans. “That is why we will need even more capacities and are gradually investing in the expansion of our own locations.”
The big, global players benefit from this location. Because this enables useful scaling, both vertically and horizontally, thanks to the fast. “Streaming providers, for example, have a great advantage here. For companies, the following also applies: the closer they are to Frankfurt, the better, and also lower, the latency. The latter is the delay in the communication speed between the server and the user of a service, ”explains the expert.
High bandwidth supports the fight against cybercrime
In addition, the large bandwidth has a positive effect on the fight against cybercrime. “Volume attacks such as DDOS attacks target the infrastructure and limit the ability to communicate with the outside world. If the bandwidth is particularly high, such failures can be compensated much better, ”concludes Evans.
The diva-e data center with its headquarters in Frankfurt am Main consists of the main brand diva-e and the subsidiaries diva-e Cloud GmbH and diva-e Datacenters GmbH. The latter also counts firstcolo as a data center operator. Around 800 employees in 13 offices at eight locations in Germany have many years of experience in digital business. As a core topic, diva-e focuses on cloud services and manages the global cloud infrastructure of its customers. She also advises in all areas of online marketing and data management. (sg)
