Unemployment: falling in Salzburg, rising across Austria
Currently, 13,734 people are unemployed in Salzburg, as the Labor Market Service (AMS) Salzburg announced in a broadcast. That is more than 7,000 less than in the previous year and still 1,135 less than in 2019 before the Corona crisis.
Second lowest unemployment rate in Salzburg
With an estimated unemployment rate of five percent, Salzburg has the second lowest value after Upper Austria (4.1 percent). For the whole of Austria, the rate is seven percent. “The development on the Salzburg labor market is very stable. As before, fewer people are registered as unemployed than before the Corona crisis. This can also be seen across all districts, ”summarizes AMS regional manager Jacqueline Beyer. The biggest drop in unemployment compared to the previous year was recorded in the city of Salzburg at 39.2 percent, and the lowest at 29.3 percent in Pinzgau. Compared to 2019, unemployment fell the most in Pongau (-13.6 percent) and the least in Flachgau (-2.2 percent). Unemployment among people under the age of 25 has fallen significantly since last year: 41.3 percent fewer are unemployed. In contrast, long-term unemployment is 29.2 percent above the 2019 level.
In addition, people are still being sought throughout the state: there are currently just over 9,800 vacancies in the state, over 3,600 more than in 2019.
Lockdown has an impact on the labor market
In contrast, the effects of the lockdown can currently be seen across Austria. Compared to last week, 12,826 people were registered as unemployed. But that is still 93,703 less than in November 2020. “The labor market situation is still stable at the end of November despite a very persistent pandemic situation, which is primarily due to the positive labor market development at the beginning of the month,” commented Labor Minister Martin Kocher (Austria) current labor market data. Kocher expects the lockdown to be even more visible on the labor market. The longer the closings are necessary, the more will die for the labor market and the economy.
900 Salzburg companies apply for short-time work
Short-time working is also increasing again, at the end of November 81,805 people were pre-registered, an increase of 3,816 compared to the previous week, as the Ministry of Labor announced on Wednesday. Around 900 companies in Salzburg have applied for short-time work phase 5.
