At 70 Domenico Volpati got back into the game. Two lives in one for the former full-back who spent his first half as a professional footballer, winning the historic Scudetto in 1985 with Verona. And subsequently he began a brilliant career as a dentist. Three years after retiring, he decided to house communities in his territory, Val di Fiemme, in Trentino, available to help combat the spread of Covid-19: and he is one of the vaccinating volunteers. To the microphones of Tuttomercatoweb tells us his story:
Domenico Volpati, at the age of 70 and after a long career, has decided to make it available to the community. A commendable lifestyle choice
“I felt the moral obligation to help the community. I have been retired for three years but I was still enrolled in the Order of Doctors and as a doctor I felt it was my duty to help. I am very busy with vaccines, let’s say I do even more than that. What to do. It takes me 2-3 days a week. We have also formed a nice group, I have found extraordinary colleagues, a wonderful paramedical staff. I have some free time left where I can walk through the woods, go mushrooming, ski “.
A tragedy, that of the pandemic, which is affecting our lives. How are you experiencing the situation from inside?
“The hospital staff was in great difficulty and there were hospital wards that no longer worked for Covid, interventions postponed because the intensive care units were busy. So the other pathologies are delayed and we will have these consequences for a few more years. it was an exaggerated increase in deaths from cardio-pulmonary diseases because there was no intervention in time, people were afraid of going to the hospital for Covid.
What was the response of the inhabitants of the Val di Fiemme
“It depends on the age groups. The over 60s thank you and gratify you, they bring you the cakes. As soon as the age is lowered, let’s say going down to 40-50 the chocolates, the cakes are gone but at least there are people well spread . As for the third doses, I notice that people of a certain age come back to thank you. “
There is still a percentage of skeptics, not to say strictly no vax
“Look, there are people who have decided to stop having ‘the Christmas tree’ put in their noses and have come for the first dose. But in many cases it is just a selfish choice, simply to avoid further deprivation and not to avoid being infected and infecting others. Yet, and I do not understand how it is possible, there are those who are more afraid of getting vaccinated than of being infected and maybe ending up in intensive care. of people and they made me understand better about who to count “.
Fortunately, Italy is among the countries with the highest number of double-dose vaccinates
“With Portugal and we are among the nations that have moved better. A united Europe does not exist in this respect”.
His name has been linked to football for many years, having been among the protagonists of the historic Verona Scudetto. At the end of his career he embarked on a medical career, a more unique than rare case
“When I finished playing football I was enrolled in Medicine. I sold my football boots at 38 and graduated 39. To finish first I had to start sacrificing first, so he should have started with the ball at 30, then but not So I went to learn how to work from a dentist friend, I moved to Trentino where I was able to open my studio where I worked there for almost 30 years “.
How did football and study coincide in the distant past?
“The fact that it has been out of course for 13 years explains the difficulties. When, from time to time, I gave an exam. Of course, I saw my classmates gradually graduating and specializing, but I never felt disheartened. I was giving an exam. And little by little I went on pursuing my path “.
Wouldn’t you have liked to stay in the world of football?
“I have the impression that many have chosen to stay in football as coaches or managers because they didn’t know what else to do. I had clear ideas, I didn’t want to stay in football absolutely. I wanted to be a doctor, it was a choice. thoughtful, strongly desired and I must also say my luck. It gave me a lot of satisfaction because it completes you, gives you self-esteem and you see that you managed to do two jobs well “.
What is your relationship with football?
“There is a big difference between the world of football of my time and that of today. I also see it in the relationship with you journalists: before there was a good relationship, there was no border that separated you from the player. what you have to pass for press officers and footballers on a pedestal, any real when in a crystal bubble. I lived the life of a footballer but also that of a university student “.
His Verona 1984/85 is a fable that at least in Italy has remained an isolated case. We will never see one outside the box win the title?
“The only one who can do it is Atalanta, who are now well structured. Our Verona was a team of friends rather than colleagues. We had a coach, Osvaldo Bagnoli, who I never shouted once. : few words but right. Beyond the Scudetto we have had other excellent leagues, with a squad of 13 players “.
Do you still feel with former teammates?
“Yes and we have created a non-profit organization where we help former players in difficulty, for example we help them to reach the minimum contributions for retirement but not only. Many have asked us for help. It is called ASD Ex Calciatori Hellas Verona”.
