Municipalities of Schaan, Vaduz and Ruggell increase landfill fees – Liechtenstein
SCHAAN / VADUZ / RUGGELL – The municipalities of Schaan, Vaduz and Ruggell are increasing their landfill fees as of January 1, 2022. The landfills where excavated material and mineral construction waste can be deposited, this in one of common message. The quality requirements for the infrastructure and the operation of these landfills presuppose cost-covering fees.
Liechtenstein knows two types of landfills: Type A for clean excavation and Type B for mineral construction waste. Above all, the latter, the most urgent requirements, such as adequate sealing against possibly contaminated seepage water, are sufficient. According to the municipalities, this entails high investments in construction and operation, but also in control and security.
The increase in costs is justifiable
According to the current landfill permits, the fees are to be set in such a way that they cover the installation and operating costs, the recultivation and any maintenance and refurbishment work after the end of the operation. This is no longer guaranteed in the case of type B landfills, which only exist in Schaan, Vaduz and Ruggell. The building administrations of the three municipalities have therefore come to the conclusion that an increase IS inevitable. In the meantime, all three municipal councils have approved the following new landfill fees, which will apply uniformly to the landfills in Schaan, Vaduz and Ruggell from January 1, 2022:
- Unpolluted excavation: 14.90 francs per ton
- Mineral construction waste: CHF 44.65 per ton
- Construction waste containing asbestos: 68 francs per ton
- Green waste: 59 francs per ton
- Rhizomes: 60 francs per ton)
- Biologically contaminated material (neophytes): 60 francs per ton
- Unproblematic sludge (Vaduz only on request): 60 francs per ton
The prices are again aligned to cover costs and are still lower compared to the rest of Switzerland. Since there is currently no wage for the vehicles in Ruggell, the fees charged there would be converted from tons to cubic meters. Detailed information can be found in the waste regulations of the municipality of Ruggell.
Protection of the landfill volume
Another innovation, according to the broadcast, is that only construction waste with a maximum edge length of 60 centimeters is permitted. This resulted in less hollow space in the already expensive construction waste compartments.
The municipalities of Schaan, Vaduz and Ruggell hope that the new regulations will result in greater use of recycling products and better separation and sorting of construction waste.
