“It means a lot to me”: Cologne university lecturer is named professor of the year

Benjamin Rott from the Institute for Mathematics Didactics at the University of Cologne was voted “Professor of the Year 2021” by the Unicum Foundation. Rott achieved first place in the humanities / social / cultural studies category. The 41-year-old has been a professor at the university since 2017, where he teaches mathematics and mathematics didactics for student teachers in the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. “It means a lot to me that this recognizes my commitment to the students and their training,” said Rott.
Rott’s main research interests are mathematical problem solving as well as mathematical talent and creativity. In his teaching, the proximity to school practice and the exchange with actors from practice, but also the professional foundation of the training are important to him. Among other things, Rott founded the YouTube channel “ars mathematica educandi”, on which he publishes videos on mathematics didactic content.
The competition “Professor of the Year” is under the patronage of the Federal Ministries for Education and Research as well as Economy and Energy. It honored professors who support their students in a special way in preparing for a career.
