The Sotheby’s house exhibits the thousand objects belonging to the couturier promised at auction. In the meantime, the exhibition can be visited like a dive into the intimacy of the fashion designer.
He will have lived in, fitted out and decorated around twenty residences during his life. This is in a way the last. Entering the exhibition of objects that belonged to Karl Lagerfeld, one has the impression of entering his home. A small Art Deco living room here, a Louis XVI bedroom there, an office signed by Jean Prouvé not far away. And then works of art, drawings, silverware, beautiful objects as if it were raining. For this ultimate sale of Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy, Sotheby’s is paying tribute to the assured taste of the fashion star, who passed away in 2019, with an exceptional exhibition installed in the salons of One Monte-Carlo and open to all before the first auctions, Friday evening.
“The collection of an intellectual and an esthete”
In charge of the inventory, the Sotheby’s teams have selected 1,200 lots in the former homes of Mr. Lagerfeld in Paris and Monte-Carlo to mount this sale in several acts. Act I, Monte-Carlo from December 3 to 5. And for this Monegasque holiday, we find everything and at all prices. Silver cutlery has a price of a few tens of euros up to the three Rolls Royces of the icon, estimated around 300,000 euros each. In this delta, the choice is vast: office necessities, lamps, dishes, small pieces of furniture. Furniture is precisely one of the focal points of the sale, especially for Art Deco lovers. “It is the life of an intellectual and an esthete. Deco from 1925 to which it has remained faithful and a tropism for architectural furniture “, explains Pierre Mothes, vice-president of Sotheby’s France.
Choupette mittens and cushions
Also aware that the memories risk of panicking the sales counters among the faithful who deify Karl Lagerfeld. In this intimate register, the sale is a treasure, where we find a sum of personal effects of the designer, from his youthful designs to his slim blazers. By way of a collection of travel trunks and leather mittens which, for sure, will make the counters soar.
Unless it is the personal effects of his conversation, Choupette, almost as famous as the fashion designer, that steals the show. The designer scraper on which she scratched, the small cushions embroidered with a “Here is the place of Choupette” could become collector’s items in the Lagerfeld pantheon.
