265 deaths prevented thanks to vaccination
Since the start of the epidemic, more than 1.5 million people have died on the European continent according to calculations by theAFP produced from official balance sheets. Of which more than 90% were over 60 years old. But there could have been many more, according to a study published late last week by the WHO regional office in Europe and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
The study estimates that the number of deaths has been halved thanks to the implementation of the vaccination in December 2020. If indeed 442,116 people and 60 years of age died from the coronavirus, 469,186 lives were saved thanks to the serum.
“Without the vaccines, many more people will die”
In Luxembourg, 490 people have died from the coronavirus since December 2020 but 265 lives have been saved since just under a vaccine thanks to vaccination, assess the WHO and the ECDC. Of which 14 in the 60-69 age group, 49 in the 70-79 age group and 202 in the over 80 age group. In France and Belgium, nearly 39,000 lives and 8,000 lives were saved respectively. Over 157,000 in England, 90,000 in Spain and over 35,000 in Italy.
“The toll of Covid-19 has been devastating in our region, but we can now categorically state that without vaccines as a tool to contain this pandemic, many more people will die,” said Hans Kluge, regional director of the WHO for Europe, which invites countries to maintain their efforts to obtain significant vaccination coverage of the most vulnerable.
77% of residents have a complete vaccination schedule
In a parliamentary response, the Minister of Health, Paulette Lenert, made Monday the point of vaccination according to the age groups. As of November 22, 90% of those over 80 had a complete vaccination schedule. Between the ages of 40 and 80, the rates fluctuated between 80.2% and 86.4%.
At the other end of the age pyramid, two thirds of 12-17 year olds were fully vaccinated, 70.7% of 18-19 year olds. The 20-30 year olds have gone through the vaccination centers less (just over 63%). A smaller proportion that must however be qualified. If they are perhaps more reluctant to go through the vaccine box, many of them are abroad for their studies.
“If people have received their full vaccination abroad, they are not taken into account in national statistics,” said the minister. Only people who have received at least one dose in the country are counted. In total, 77% of residents had a complete vaccination schedule as of November 22.
