Everything was consumed in a few minutes, in a way that is very reminiscent of the sensational theft of jewels from the private collection of Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani, a member of the royal family of Qatar, which took place on January 3, 2018 at the Doge’s Palace in Venice: a pair of platinum earrings with a diamond and a brooch with a ruby (worth two million euros) stolen by a foreign band of five people, subsequently arrested. In the viewfinder, this time, five kilograms of gold ended up divided into 125 “vials”, that is pebbles and filaments found between the sands of the Po, Ticino, Adda and Oglio. An estimated value of 700 thousand euros, the fruit of a patient research that is so much of the Old West. And exhibited with some pride at the “Mineral Show” staged at the Verona Fair from 26 to 28 November by him, Luca Pasqualini, 47 years old from Bereguardo, in the Pavia area, and by profession a gold digger. Everything disappeared at 6.32 pm on Saturday 27 November when someone, taking advantage of the absence of the exhibitor and his father Armando, who had left at 18.20, took the case into the square, emptying it completely.
The gold digger: “Years of research gone missing”
This is what Pasqualini himself denounced who, now, says he is shocked. “I am presented in the pavilion and when I saw that the case, with nuggets and straws well placed, was no longer there, I was struck», He explained to Corriere della Sera. “I hoped they moved it without telling me, but after a few minutes one from security he put a hand on my shoulder and said: “It’s out there on the square, but empty” ». The reconstruction of the Lupine shot was provided by the cameras dthe Veronafiere, who at 18.32, in fact, filmed two men dressed in black overalls, face masks and caps. The couple grabbed the casket, fitted with wheels, dragging it to the back and emptying it completely, and then exiting the main entrance and driving away. About the episode investigates the Verona mobile squad, which is examining the images to identify the thieves.
The police investigation
Pasqualini is now heartbroken. Also because, he points out, nuggets and straws can be easily melted into ingots, making “the fruit of 45 years of research” as well as «an important geological and archaeological value, a piece of our history». The Veronafiere management says they are “sorry” about the incident, and while specifying “that they have not received any news of the same until Sunday morning”, they assure that they have “activated immediately, alerting the mobile team without delay, intervened with the forensics who made the findings and viewed the images of the security cameras inside the neighborhood ». “At the same time – adds the Fair – Veronafiere staff provided assistance to exhibitors, accompanying them to the police station in Verona for the report of theft that they made at a later time and in the place of residence. Veronafiere is not in possession of a copy of this report ».
The previous shots
So, the shot reconstruction: “The theft in question – explains the organization – was carried out at 18.32, when the stand had already been left unattended by 18.20 by the exhibitors, forty minutes before the closing time of the event, scheduled for 7 pm ». Veneto, as mentioned, is not new to daring strokes. In addition to the theft of the Doge’s Palace, in fact, in January 2016 five thieves (later captured) managed to steal over one million euros in diamonds during the Vicenza Gold Fair.
