National League: Tigers goalie Robert Mayer on the jump
Five and a half months was Robert Mayer in Davos spectators. Until all three goalkeepers were injured in Langnau and the 32-year-old moved to the Emmental. Mayer is happy. «We have very good defenders. They may not be the fastest, but they read the game well and make it so much easier for me, ”he says.
Mayer is on loan with the Tigers. For now until the end of January. However, a move to another club this season is out of the question for licensing reasons. And a return to Davos seems unlikely. Most recently, coach Christian Wohlwend (44) said in the SonntagsBlick: “We did not communicate on the same frequency.” And: “It was better for both sides to go their separate ways.”
Wohlwend is right
“He’s right,” says Mayer before they meet again on Tuesday in Davos. Mayer is enjoying every game he can play all the more. “I feel good again,” he says. Nevertheless, it should be a temporary commitment. The Tigers, who also lose Ivars Punnenovs (27, from Lausanne), are exploring the market. “Mayer’s agent informed us that Geneva would be exciting under this option,” says sports director Marc Eichmann.
Mayer played in the Rhonestadt between 2014 and 2020 and met his wife there. “I haven’t signed anything yet,” says Mayer. The only thing that is clear is that he would definitely like to play for another two years. After his career, he can then imagine taking a year off to further his education. «My wife works too. I don’t always have to bring money home, ”he says with a smile.
Langnau is considering several options. One is Luca Boltshauser. With the 28-year-old, Punnenovs and Tobias Stephan (37), Lausanne already has three regular goals under contract.
