The Court of Verona sentenced the journalist Franco Di Mare for defaming the commander of the local police of Verona, Luigi Altamura.
The fact dates back to April 15, 2016, when Di Mare (later appointed director of Rai 3) was host of “Uno Mattina”, on the Rai flagship network. Within the column «I’ll be Franco», Di Mare commented on a series of disciplinary proceedings including one open to an agent of Neapolitan origins for alleged “use of the Campania accent”. Altamura felt vilified and mocked and filed a complaint for aggravated defamation in the press.
Today judge Enrico Zuccon found Francesco Di Mare guilty (who signed himself as Franco as a journalist), condemning him 15 thousand euro fine and to the payment of court costs, granting the accused the benefit of suspension of the sentence, subordinating him to the fulfillment of the obligation to pay compensation within three months of the sentence becoming final. The judge in fact sentenced Di Mare and Rai jointly and severally to pay damages against Luigi Altamura as a civil party for 30 thousand euros, in addition to defense costs, and compensation for damages against the Municipality of Verona at 7,500 euros.
